Steph Patsula is an interdisciplinary artist based in amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton), Treaty 6 Territory. Working across photography, sound, performance, and lens-based media, their practice explores notation, memory, and sensory experience through images, language, and ritual acts of attention.

Patsula's work considers how experiences of sound, atmosphere, place, and presence are translated into visual, sonic, and material forms. Through photography, recordings, scores, moving image, and site-responsive performance, they investigate the ways documentation both preserves and transforms experience, treating images and language as propositions rather than fixed records.

Drawing from folklore, myth, ritual, and experimental systems of notation, their practice examines the shifting boundaries between the sacred and the secular, as well as relationships between human and more-than-human worlds. Improvisation and material inquiry are central to their process, which often incorporates found objects, handmade instruments, and constructed environments to create installations and performances that invite sustained listening, close observation, and embodied attention.

Across these varied forms, Patsula asks how images, language, and sound can hold experiences that resist representation.
